President’s Message for February

Snowy greetings!

That was some snowstorm we had earlier this week! (I’m writing this on Saturday the 17th.) Fortunately, today was finally above freezing, and there was a whole lot of melting going on. Maybe Punxsutawney Phil was right after all! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the spring thaw.

And speaking of spring thaw, have we got a lot of activities planned! There are June Pride events in Boston and Portland to attend, and this year we’ll even have a vehicle in the Boston parade. (That way we can take turns resting our tired legs.) Our annual sunset cruise is in July, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. Then in September there’s the Harbor to the Bay AIDS benefit bike ride, and this year, in addition to our top-rated sponsored rest stop, we’re even having a rider: our own beloved Jeremy. (By next September there may be others in the SGM riding team; care to join in on the fun?) And there are always theater outings and gay-bar get-togethers to attend.

And all of this is in addition to our fabulous weekly Monday meetings at South Church.

So why did I mention spring thaw when most of these events take place in the summer? Well, all of these events need prior planning, and what better way to usher in the longer days! So if you’re looking for a way to get more connected with SGM, you might consider joining one of the planning committees. That’s actually a great way to get to know some of your fellow SGM’ers better.

SGM logoThe board has also been debating getting shirts made with SGM’s colorful logo, so you can wear these shirts when you’re participating in these various activities. They will be a great way to advertise our esteemed organization.

So buck up, my friends! Hunker down; winter is losing the battle, and spring is just around the corner. Be sure to check the website frequently for program updates and other information. Or don’t bother checking what the program is beforehand—just come whenever you can on Monday evenings and be pleasantly surprised!

Until next month, be out, be proud, and think warm thoughts!
